Comparing Billiards, Pool, and Snooker

A pool table is a great investment that will give you hours of fun! When you invest in a pool table for your home, you’ll be able to play billiards, pool, snooker, and more. Check out this guide to learn about the differences between billiards, pool, and snooker.

Have you ever seen a pool table without pockets? If so, you have possibly already been exposed to a true billiards game. There are no pockets on the table for billiards because this game focuses on hitting the balls to gain a certain number of points. During a game of carom billiards, a certain number of “object” balls are placed on the table. Players must use their cue to strike the cue ball and hit one or more of these object balls in order to receive points. There is another variation called pocket billiards, which does use pockets during the game.

Much like pocket billiards, pool is a game where players try to hit balls into specific pockets around the table. There are always 15 object balls at the start of the game, and players use cues to hit a standard cue ball to strike these object balls. Typically, seven balls feature solid colors, seven feature stripes, and there is one black eight ball. There are two players, or two teams, that must try to hit either all of the solid or striped balls into the pockets before ending the game by hitting the eight ball into a pocket.

Snooker is another game that requires players to hit object balls into the pockets around the pool table. In this game, players use a cue ball to hit one of twenty-two snooker balls. There are 15 red balls on the table and the remaining six are black, blue, brown, green, pink, and yellow. Players must hit the balls into the pockets in a specific order to win the game.
